Herald of Spring – The Birch Tree

# Natural healing | 4. April 2016

At the weekend, it was warm with gentle greens and blooms everywhere. The birch included, easily recognizable with its white trunk and bright green leaves. There is also the white birch and the downy birch, both blossom from April to May and form catkins. The birch together with the alder and hazelnut, belong to the so-called early bloomers, whose pollen can trigger allergies with symptoms such as a runny nose, watery and itchy eyes.
The leaves of both trees are used as a remedy, since they contain flavonoids which have a diuretic effect, for example, more urine is formed and the urinary tract can hence be flushed out. That is why birch leaves help with bladder infections and are used for purification. Often, birch leaves are also used together with other diuretic plants such as goldenrod or horsetail. It is important to drink a lot to promote flushing and cleansing. If the kidneys or heart, however, do not function properly, you should rather refrain from drinking birch. The same is also true if you are allergic to birch pollen!
